How the Gold Rate Is Decided in India
Why the price on your jeweller's board changes every day, and what actually sits behind it: global prices, the rupee, import duty and local demand.

The number at the top of this page is the base price of gold per gram. It is the starting point for every quote you will hear at a jeweller, but it is not the price on your bill. Three things sit between the two: the purity you choose, the making charge, and GST.
Purity first. 24K is almost pure gold and is what coins and bars are made of. 22K, at ₹1,36,750 per gram today, is the standard for jewellery in India. 18K, at ₹1,11,890 per gram, is common in diamond and lightweight pieces. The price falls with the gold content, which is why 22K costs about 8% less than 24K.
Then the extras. Here is a worked example at today's rate for a 10 gram, 22K chain with a 10% making charge:
| Gold value (10 g × ₹1,36,750) | ₹13,67,500 |
|---|---|
| Making charge at 10% | ₹1,36,750 |
| GST at 3% on gold and making | ₹45,128 |
| What you pay | ₹15,49,378 |
The jeweller's board rate and our rate can differ by a small amount, but if a quote comes out far from this kind of sum, ask them to explain the gap line by line. Our gold price calculator lets you try your own weight, purity and making charge.
Four things do most of the work, and it helps to know which one is behind a given day's move.
For the longer version, read our guide on how the gold rate is decided in India.
Which one is right depends on why you are buying. If you want to wear it, jewellery is the only choice. If you want to hold gold as an investment, the other options usually cost less to buy and sell, though each has its own catch.
| Option | Best for | Costs to watch | Check before you buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jewellery | Wearing, weddings, gifting | Making charges, wastage, GST | BIS hallmark and HUID, itemised bill |
| Coins and bars | Holding gold with a low extra cost | A small premium over the rate, GST | Sealed pack, purity certificate, buy-back terms |
| Gold ETFs and funds | Investing without storing gold | Fund expenses, brokerage | A demat account for ETFs, the fund's expense ratio |
| Digital gold | Small, regular purchases | The gap between buy and sell price, GST on purchase | Who holds the gold, how it is audited, withdrawal charges |
| Sovereign Gold Bonds | Holding gold for years, with interest | Market price can differ from the gold price | Whether new issues are open, the lock-in period |
We cover the trade-offs in more detail in physical gold vs gold ETF vs digital gold vs gold bonds. This is general information, not investment advice.
The rate on this page is a reference, not what a buyer will pay you. Expect a deduction for testing and melting, and expect it to differ between buyers. Get quotes from at least two, ask for the purity test to be done in front of you, and get the weight, purity and rate written on the receipt. Our guide on selling old gold walks through it, and the sell calculator gives you a rough figure.
Nobody can reliably time the gold market, and we will not pretend to. What we can show you is context. Today's 24K price of ₹1,49,180 per gram sits around the middle of its 12-month range of ₹1,19,400 to ₹1,78,850. In the last 11 months, the average 24K price rose in 5 of them, as the table above shows. Many buyers deal with the uncertainty by spreading purchases over several months instead of buying once, and by buying for a reason, such as a wedding, rather than to catch a price.

Today, 24K gold is ₹1,49,180 per gram (₹14,91,800 per 10 grams), 22K gold is ₹1,36,750 per gram (₹13,67,500 per 10 grams), and 18K gold is ₹1,11,890 per gram (₹11,18,900 per 10 grams).
At today's rate, ₹1,00,000 buys about 0.67 grams of 24K gold or 0.73 grams of 22K gold, before making charges and GST. After 3% GST on the gold alone, that comes to about 0.65 grams of 24K or 0.71 grams of 22K.
Purity. 24K gold is about 99.9% gold, while 22K is about 91.6% gold mixed with metals such as copper or silver. You pay for the gold content, so 22K costs roughly 8% less per gram. Most jewellery in India is 22K because pure gold is too soft to hold intricate designs.
No. Our rate is the base price of gold per gram. A jeweller adds making charges and 3% GST, and some shops price slightly above or below the benchmark. Use this page to check that a quote is reasonable, then ask for an itemised bill.
They are the same rate in different units. A rate of ₹1,00,000 per 10 grams is ₹10,000 per gram. Rate boards often show 10 grams, while jewellers usually quote per gram, so check which one you are reading.
India's gold price follows the international gold price, the dollar-rupee exchange rate, import duty and local demand. A move in any one of these can change the domestic rate even on a day when the others are quiet.
Slightly. Differences come from local taxes, transport costs and jeweller association rates. You will usually see gaps of a few rupees per gram between major cities, not large swings. Check your city's page for the local figure.
They are what the jeweller charges for crafting the piece, either as a percentage of the gold value or as a fixed amount per gram. They vary by design and by shop, and they are usually not refunded when you sell.
Look for the BIS hallmark, which shows the purity grade (such as 22K916) and a six-character HUID code. The HUID can be verified through BIS. Our guide on checking gold purity explains the steps.
On days when the market is closed, the previous rate usually carries forward. The date at the top of the page shows which day's rate you are looking at.
