How We Get Our Gold Rates
What the numbers on this site mean, where they come from, how often they change, and how we keep ourselves honest.
Trust matters more than anything else on a site like this. This page sets out, in plain terms, how GoldRateToday gets its rates, what we do to them, and what we promise about our content. If anything here is unclear, please ask us.
1. What the rate is
The rates on this site are the base price of gold per gram in Indian rupees, for 24K, 22K and 18K purity. They do not include making charges, wastage, stone costs, hallmarking fees, GST or any other cost a jeweller may add. They are a reference price, not a quote, and not an offer to buy or sell.
2. Where the rates come from
Rates are collected automatically from publicly available market rate sources several times a day. Where our team spots a figure that looks wrong, we can correct it by hand. We publish the rate for each day we record, and the date on each page tells you which day's rate you are looking at.
3. Benchmark cities and nearby cities
We track ten benchmark markets directly: Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala, Pune, Vadodara and Ahmedabad. For other towns, we show the rate of the nearest benchmark market, because jewellers across a region usually price off the same main-market rate. Each city page states which market it follows. This means the rate and the price history for a nearby city are the same as those of its benchmark market. A local jeweller may still charge slightly more or less than the figure shown, so please treat city rates as a reliable reference rather than a fixed local quote.
4. Values we calculate
- 18K for cities. We publish 24K and 22K city rates directly. We work out the 18K rate from the 24K rate, because 18K gold is 75% pure (18 divided by 24).
- Weights. The prices for 8 grams, 10 grams, a tola (11.66 grams), 100 grams and a kilogram are simple multiples of the per-gram rate.
- Calculators. For 24K and 22K the calculators use the published city rate. For 18K and 14K they scale the 24K rate by purity. Results are estimates.
- Ranges, averages and changes. Highs, lows, monthly averages and percentage changes are worked out from the daily rates we have recorded.
5. How often rates are updated
Rates are checked repeatedly through the day. The most frequent checks are in the morning, when the day's rate is usually set, with further checks later in the day. The timestamp at the top of each page shows when the rate was last refreshed. When the market is closed, for example on a Sunday or a holiday, the previous rate carries forward.
6. Price history
Charts and tables use the daily rate recorded on this site. On days with no recorded update, the previous day's rate is carried forward so that charts have no gaps. This means a run of identical prices in the history is usually a closed-market period, not a missing data point. Past prices are a record, not a forecast.
7. Standards for our guides and articles
- We write for readers, in plain language, and we explain terms the first time we use them.
- We avoid claims we cannot support. We do not predict prices, and we do not tell you that now is a good or bad time to buy.
- For rules that change often, such as tax rates, import duty and lending limits, we describe how things generally work and point you to the official source rather than quoting a figure that may be out of date.
- Every guide shows the date it was last updated, and we review them from time to time.
8. Independence and advertising
We do not accept payment from jewellers, brokers, lenders, platforms or gold schemes to change or promote a rate, or to influence what a guide says. If we ever add advertising, sponsored content or affiliate links, we will clearly label them, keep them separate from our rates and editorial content, and update our privacy policy and cookie policy to match.
9. Corrections
We make mistakes, and the sources we rely on sometimes do too. If you believe a rate or a statement is wrong, send us the page, the figure you saw, the time you saw it and, if you can, a source. We review every report and correct confirmed errors as quickly as we can. Where a correction changes the meaning of an article, we say so on the page.
10. What we do not do
We do not sell gold, silver or any financial product. We do not give investment, tax or legal advice. We do not guarantee that any rate is the price at which you can buy or sell. Please read our disclaimer for the full position.
